Golf at Tryall

Golf is as much a part of The Tryall Club as the magnificent villas and the ocean views. The course is integral to the Club’s fabric, twisting and winding through the estate as it makes it way down to the coastline. Rated as one of the Caribbean’s finest, our course is both challenging and beautiful with a fascinating heritage.
It didn’t take long for Tryall’s founders to start building a golf course. Just three years after opening the club they employed celebrated course designer Ralph Plummer to create a course that would work with the estate’s unique topography. Plummer’s design cleverly blends the 17th century sugar plantation’s layout with the coastline and the landscape’s natural features.
Today, Tryall offers everything you could want from a 21st century course. Audubon certified since 2010, extensively rebuilt and improved it is now of a higher-quality than ever, complete with modern irrigation systems. Plummer’s original concept remains – the design uses natural hazards unique to the location, such as the trade winds – with the addition of an ocean-side fourth hole to create a new challenges for every golfer.
Anyone can play at Tryall. Whether you’re a complete beginner, a serious amateur or experienced player there’s plenty for you here. Our Golf Academy offers expert tuition for everyone, with small classes with plenty of instructors means you’ll get the attention you need to improve your game.
Modern doesn’t have to mean busy. The private nature of the club means that the greens never get crowded, allowing you to play in peace and enjoy the surroundings. Come and experience a world-class course that has challenged and delighted the likes of Nick Faldo and Ernie Els.
During the summer of 2016, the back 9 holes were successfully renovated and the results highly acclaimed by our members as well as guests. Next summer we will renovate the front 9 holes, closing them from 13th May until 16th October 2017. During this time we will undertake a complete reconstruction of all front 9 greens complexes, the practice putting green and the chipping green. New Tifeagle Ultra-Bermuda grass will be laid in on the putting surfaces and their surrounds modified to incorporate new design elements that will enhance visual appeal and playability. We will also install a new irrigation system on all front 9 holes.
During the renovation period the back 9 holes will remain open as will the driving range. Members and guests who wish to play 18 holes during this period can play the back 9 twice. Multiple tee box options will be available in order to give a different feel to the course. All green fees during this period will be charged at our 9 hole rates regardless of whether the golfer plays 9 or 18 holes. Members and guests can also take advantage of a preferential 18 hole rate of US$109 per person (green fee, cart and caddy fee) at Cinnamon Hill and White Witch golf courses. Our Guest Services can advise costs for transportation to Rose Hall where both courses are located.

The Course

An enduring legacy for the modern golfer

The very best golf courses are more than just a series of greens and holes. They blend and assimilate with their environment, using natural features to provide unique challenges to the player. Ours is just such a course.
One of Tryall’s most enduring features, the 18-hole, 6836-yard course is the work of celebrated golf course designer Ralph Plummer. Plummer, who worked on over 100 courses during his 40-year career, created an amazing course for Tryall.
He added features where there were none, without creating clutter and distractions. He worked with the terrain, locating holes across the gently rolling hills for contrast with the earlier flatter holes. Water features, just the right amount of bunkers and crosswinds add to the intrigue.
Today’s golfer will never lose interest in a round at Tryall, thanks to Plummer’s work. The seventh hole incorporates the aqueduct that supplied the sugar plantation’s waterwheel – you play your shot right through the aqueduct’s stone pillars. The challenge of the wind is ever present, demanding concentration and careful assessment of your next shot.
We haven’t allowed Plummer’s legacy to stifle development. For the 1992 Johnnie Walker Championship we added a fourth hole in true Plummer style, incorporating the ocean and the Flint River. Now we have a course that flows down to the sea and then, eight holes later, rises to 180 feet. New tees have been discreetly incorporated, further improving on the design.
Technically challenging, beautiful to look at and never overcrowded, Tryall’s golf course is one of the Caribbean’s finest.

Favourite Holes

Four of Tryall’s finest holes, as chosen by our golf pros.

#4, 175 yards, PAR 3
Our signature hole> A par 3 where the tee shot must carry Flint River located short of the green and avoid the Caribbean Sea to its left. The Trade Winds, which traditionally blow from the Sea, merely add to the challenge.

#7, 435 yards, PAR 4
A spectacular and historic par 4. The tee shot on this uphill, left to right dogleg must be driven between Tryall’s 200+ year-old aqueduct and the approach shot is played to an elevated green which is located beneath the historic Tryall Great House.

#11, 500 yards, PAR 5
A challenging uphill right to left dogleg par 5 that plays longer than the yardage suggests. This hole showcases many of the indigenous trees of Jamaica: All Spice, Bread Fruit, Mango, Ackee, Guango, Sour Orange and Birch all line the 11th fairway.

#14, 450 yards, PAR 4
This stunning, but demanding downhill par 4 offers awe-inspiring views of the Caribbean Sea. The fairway sweeps downhill from right to left and leads to one of the trickiest greens complexes on the course.

Club Legacy

Where today’s golfer meets tradition

Here at The Tryall Club, we are keenly aware of the fact that we are the custodians of one of the Caribbean’s finest golf courses. It is as important to us as it is to you that the course is properly looked after and that we work hard to ensure it has a future.
So we have invested in modernizing the course, but we are proud of our heritage. Our course has played host to world champions and world championships. Now we’re dedicated to providing you with the very best golfing experience in Jamaica, mixing tradition with the present day.

Ralph Plummer

A natural course architect who worked with nature

For a man who worked on over 100 courses and had a 40-year career in course design, Ralph Plummer deserves to be better known. Not just for his output, but for the sheer quality of his designs and his innate ability to work with landscapes. Plummer was reportedly happiest when he was working on site, and combined a designer’s sensibility with a thorough knowledge of how to build the courses he’d penned.
What really set Ralph Plummer apart from his contemporaries was the way he utilized natural features. He preferred to work with what was there, using trees instead of bunkers, exploiting gradient changes to provide challenges and site greens where they would be subject to crosswinds. He avoided the artificial, resulting in a style that is at once uncluttered and natural.
His competency at golf helped. A good player, Plummer believed his ability on the course assisted his ability at the drawing board. He also had an eye on the future, and knew that improvements in technology and technique would change how golf was played and how courses were designed.
This is what makes Tryall’s course so special. The only example of Plummer’s work outside of the US, it combines all of his classic features with a stunning ocean-side location.

Past Events & Championships

Champions for a championship course

The potential of Tryall’s course to host world-class golf events was quickly recognized. In 1963 Tryall hosted Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf, a series of televised matches between golf pros and the very first professional golf competitions. The hour-long broadcasts followed the players around the green, chatting to them in between shots and talking about the host country.
During the 1980s and early ’90s Tryall became a regular fixture on the LPGA calendar, hosting not only the LPGA-Senior PGA Mazda Championship but the LPGA Jamaica Classic too.
Then came the Johnnie Walker World Championship. Held at Tryall for five consecutive years, the Johnnie Walker was a prestigious invitational featuring the world’s highest earning players. So the likes of Nick Faldo, Ernie Els and Fred Couples all played at Tryall, creating an event of supreme quality with players rarely seen outside of the majors.
Today you can enjoy this wonderful course, following in the footsteps of those legendary players.
